Scouts in the time of Covid-19

Right now we’re facing some new challenges. To adapt to the challenges, Troop 1776 is doing the following:

Meetings

We’re having virtual meetings, where we’ll have Scouts call in with Zoom. Our first meeting is April 9th at 6pm. We’ll be working on Robotics and a new patch, Social Distancing! (Not an official merit badge) Watch for an email from Scoutmaster Hal for the link.

Camping

Because of the virus, we have canceled or delayed some camp outs. However, we believe that our summer camp will still happen. Please let Scoutmaster Hal know ASAP if you are planning on attending Camp Tifie in July. We can get a discount if we register by May 1.

Advancements

How can we have our boys work on advancements during this time? Here are some ideas:

Service

You can have your boy work on service hours as a family. He can clean a trail or park and still maintain social distancing. Or do yardwork for someone who can’t get out. There are ways to serve online too! He can tutor someone via video conferencing. Or help the Smithsonian index their collections. https://transcription.si.edu/ . Just keep track of the hours.

Leadership

Leadership can happen outside of Scout meetings. Patrol leaders can still direct and plan. And our troop still needs an historian or webmaster.

Rank advancements and Eagle

If your boy needs to advance, we will have a board of review over video conferencing. And your boy can still work on his Eagle.

Remember, being prepared also means being able to adjust to unexpected challenges. We can do this!
