Summary
Met online on November 8. Discussed re-chartering, growing the troop, and planning for the year.
Chartering organization
It’s been proposed that we adopt a new chartering organization. While Timpanogos Hospital has been very supportive, we have been unable to meet there due to Covid-19. Even when we no longer need to deal with Covid-19 restrictions, the space at Timpanogos is too small for our growing needs.
Brio Solar, where Assistant Scoutmaster Tareq Butler works, has offered to be the chartering organization for our troop. They’ve also generously offered to pay our re-chartering fees for our boys and leaders. The troop would meet at Brio’s offices. Currently they are located in the Canyon View business park, but will be relocating to a new building in South Orem at the beginning of next year.
The committee called a vote, and it was unanimously decided that Brio will become the chartering organization.
November 30th is the hard deadline to re-charter the troop.
Cub Scout pack
The troop is looking for a Cub Scout pack to be a feeder pack for the troop. We have a pack that’s interested, but they have both girls and boys and would like us to have a place for their girls to advance.
If we were to accept girls into our troop, there would have to be scoutmasters over the girls’ troop. It would not be a true co-ed troop, but two troops overseen by the same committee.
The pros of combining with this pack would be that we would have new recruits for the troop. It was noted that 12 troops in the area weren’t re-chartering. Campouts would be handled like the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints treats youth conferences and pioneer treks.
Issues would be the necessity of having separate facilities for the boys and the girls. Also we would need to have leaders for the girls’ troop.
No final decision was made concerning this.
Troop activities
Scoutmaster Hal had sent out a survey to determine the best day and time to meet. Thursday was the overwhelming choice. The committee agreed that 7pm was better to meet than 6pm.
There’s a merit badge powwow in December. The major events for the year include:
- Aviation in January where the boys have the opportunity to use UVU’s flight simulator
- Horsemanship in March
- June rafting trip
- Summer Scout camp
Next committee meeting
There will not be a committee meeting in December. January 10th is the next committee meeting.
