This process is current as of January, 1, 2020. We strive to keep this accurate, but you should always double-check with the Scout council before beginning your Eagle.
Resources
Here’s a great resource to help organize your Eagle paperwork. Eagle binder
There’s an app called Path to Eagle that you can download for your phone. Note: This app is not officially affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America.
Before you begin. . .
While there are no hard-set rules for an Eagle project, there are some guidelines that the council follows when approving an Eagle project. The project should:
- Shows significant planning on the Scout’s part. The Scout should be in charge of this project. Not Mom. Not the Scoutmaster.
- Helps the Scout develop and grow. This project should really challenge the Scout. It should not be easy for them.
- Shows the Scout in a leadership position. The Scout should not be doing all the work. The Scout should be directing and guiding others to do the work.
The average Eagle project takes about 160-175 hours to complete. This includes planning hours. If your boy’s project has significantly less hours, you should re-evaluate the project.
Eagle project approval
- When your Scout is ready to begin on their Eagle project, they need to contact their Scoutmaster. The Scoutmaster will assign them an Eagle coach to work with them.
- Your Scout needs to get three signatures on their proposal – the Scoutmaster, someone from the troop’s committee (usually the Committee Chair or Advancement Chair) , and the beneficiary.
- Once those signatures are on the paperwork, your Scout needs to set up an appointment with Joel Zabriskie. Contact Joel at 801-420-3500 or at joelzed@yahoo.com.
- Your Scout meets with an approval board. If the proposal is sufficient, they’ll sign the paperwork approving the project.
When the Eagle has been completed
- Log into scoutbook.org. Click My Dashboard > Administration. Select your Scout. Scroll down to Reports and select Eagle Application. Your Eagle application downloads with most of the fields filled in, including their merit badges!
- Gather your written letters of recommendation. The letters are to be sealed and the family is not to see them. Deliver the letters to the Eagle coach or mentor that’s working with your Scout.
- The Eagle coach verifies the Scout’s application.
- The Eagle coach helps the Scout assemble the Eagle packet which consists of: Eagle application (completely filled out in ink or typewritten), the Eagle verification form, the sealed letters of references, the goals and ambition statement, and the completed and signed Eagle project paperwork.
- The complete Eagle packet is brought to the Council service center. Once the packet is received the Scout will be contacted to make an appointment to appear before an Eagle board of review.
